On the morning of March 25, 2020 Welton Adolphus Bugg Sr., age 91, transitioned peacefully into his next life after a long illness. On the other side, patiently waiting to welcome Welton, were several of his family members, including his wife of 67 years, Florence (Garvin) Bugg; his eldest son Welton A. Bugg Jr. (Bugzy); and granddaughter Trenna Stewart; his parents; five brothers and five sisters.
Welton was born on April 30, 1928. He was the 12th child born to Addis M. and Eunice Grier Bugg in Pine Mountain (Chipley), Georgia. As a young boy he worked his family’s farm alongside his brothers and sisters and attended East Depot High School in LaGrange, GA. On December 10, 1950, he married Florence Garvin of Boston, MA and shortly thereafter he entered the Korean War as a member of the United States Army.
After his discharge from the Army, Welton returned to his wife and children living in Boston, Massachusetts. He became a skilled auto body repairman working for the Davidson Chevrolet dealership in Medford for many years and ultimately retired from Brigham Gill in Framingham. Welton was meticulous about keeping his cars clean. He wiped his car down every day with a damp cloth – no soap, just water. You could always see your reflection in his cars!
Affectionately known as “Boss Man” by his sons in-law, Welton will be remembered by his family as a loving and kind father who possessed a quiet strength. He valued family above all else. His siblings lived in Georgia, New York and Boston and he did not hesitate to jump on the road with his wife and children to visit them and their families for events big and small. He was very instrumental in initiating the biennial celebration of the Bugg family that has been going on for 50 years – the Bugg Family Reunion. For many years Welton was the leader of the Boston Reunion Committee ensuring the group put together an amazing event where everyone was welcomed, new members introduced, and relationships renewed. He spent many of his last days recounting family events and remembering past relationships.
Welton is survived by his children Cheryl (Michael) Williams of Hanson, MA; Lemieda (Terry) Jeter of Kennesaw, GA; Duane E. (Marlania) Bugg of Bedford, TX; Glynis L. Bugg of Mattapan, MA; Craig A. Bugg of Mattapan, MA; Janine L. Bugg of Pawtucket, RI; sister Eunice Johnson of Queens, NY; brother Quinton Bugg of LaGrange, GA; grandchildren Michael Jr. (Bridgette), Marques (Ana), Duane Jr., Shayna, Jason, Tasha, Andrea, Brittney, Justin, Imani, Craig Jr., Kaley, Natayha; ten great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
