Ulysess was born on September 30, 1925 to William and Minnie Lee Utley in Waynesboro, GA and was one of 14 children. He was educated in Waynesboro, GA. After graduating school, he
entered the military and became a Sargent and served two years.
At an early age, Ulysess found the Lord and was baptized at Bottsford Spring Baptist Church in Waynesboro, GA, where he
served as an usher. He later relocated to Boston, MA and continued his worship at New Hope Baptist Church.
Ulysess married the love of his life, Eleanor, in 1956. They had no children.
Upon coming to Boston, Ulysess accepted employment at the Veteran Hospital in Jamaica Plain, MA, where he worked until his retirement after 25 years.
An entrepreneur, Ulysess opened Utley’s Variety Store with Eleanor in 1969. Utley’s Variety Store was a staple on Humboldt Avenue in Roxbury. Ulysess had a strong work ethic – working at
both the variety store and the Veterans Hospital at the same time. The Utley Variety Store was sold after 30 years of dedication to the Roxbury Community.
Ulysess leaves to cherish his memories: wife, Eleanor; Goddaughter Quianna Carrington of Boston, MA; nephews Lamar L. (Natalie) Utley of Boston, MA, Eddie (Mary) Utley of FL,
Maurice Bonner of VA; Nieces Luxora Bonner of MO, Joanne Carrington of Boston, MA, Jean Newton of FL, and Shirley Jennings of FL; Brothers-in-Law Rupert Walcott of Boston, MA
and Rudolph (Patricia) Walcott of Boston. He also leaves a host of nephews and nieces throughout the country.
