Phyllis Andrea Gilbert was born to the late Greta Rhynes Morrison and Eddie Edwards in the city of Statesboro, GA.
Phyllis attended the Tattnell Industrial High School in Reidsville, GA. After her graduation she relocated to Boston, MA in the year 1968, to live with her mother who moved to Massachusetts the previous year.
Phyllis gained her first job the year she moved to Boston, the job she was dedicated to for fifty years, her employer was University Hospital. Which later joined with Boston City Hospital, now known as Boston Medical Center.
Phyllis trained and received many certifications over her years of employment in the nursing field. The knowledge she gained made her a very valuable nurse, her knowledge and work ethics which she shared with countless new nurses that were employed over the years. Phyllis gained the respect of those in her circle at work, they always called her Miss Phyllis. Phyllis was a true mentor to the young nurses at University Boston Medical Center.
Phyllis’ spirit was like the Good Samaritan her heart went out to people. I know she daily asked God to have mercy on those having difficult times. She shared her words of encouragement and wisdom, and more often than not she shared her monetary resources when she came into contact with a person she knew was extremely down and out and truly in need.
Although she had no children of her own Phyllis was a magnet for the children living in her neighborhood of Walnut Ave and Walnut Park. Her love for them was great, she made sure to provide food for the young ones she knew were hungry. Aunt Phyllis was well known by the young and old in her neighborhood.
Phyllis walked with God daily, she was faithful in reading the word of God and anointing her head with oil. She prayed for her family, and those whom she knew were sick and shut in. Phyllis was a long-time member of St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church of Boston.
Phyllis’ journey has concluded. She leaves to mourn her passing her Husband of 30 years Mr. Rick Gilbert; her stepdaughter Chanel Antonnett Winslow of Ohio, a sister-in-law Barbara Ann Gilbert, a sister Patricia Morrison, two nieces Lillian and Felica Morrison of Fayetteville NC, her aunt Willie Rose Mack of Savannah, GA, two uncles Richard Larry Rhynes and Ralph (Mary) Rhynes of Collins, GA and a host of other relative and friends.
