Mary E. Epps also known as “Betty” was born on June 29, 1947 in Augusta, Georgia to Washington Eddie Hicks and Dorothy Williams. Mary passed away in her home peacefully on May 10, 2021.
Mary grew up in Augusta, Georgia where she attended Catholic School. She moved to Boston, Massachusetts in 1968 to be closer to her mother and sister Zola Mae Hicks.
Mary worked many jobs throughout her career until she finally settled at Boston Children’s Hospital, where she had a 31 year career span as an Environmental Services Supervisor. She was well known as Ms. Mary by her co-workers and other Boston Children’s Hospital Staff. Mary was very friendly, outgoing, and she was a people person. Mary touched the hearts and souls of everyone she met.
Mary enjoyed playing her daily lottery numbers, playing cards, taking trips to the casino, getting her nails done and she was an avid home shopping network buyer.
Mary was like a mother to many including her beloved niece Sharon Hicks-Wright, James Meadows, Dwight Thompson, Robert Armstead, Gordon Gleaves, Charles Smith and many others.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister.
Mary is survived by her son Jerry L. Epps of Brockton, MA, her daughter Gloria J. Epps of Boston, MA. Grandchildren Jalen Epps of Plano, TX, Javon Epps of Sharon, MA, daughter-in-law Cheri L. Epps of Sharon, MA, niece Sharon Hicks-Wright, great nieces Taisha Hicks, Keisha Wright, great nephew Keilin Wright, great-great-nephews Jaiyan Civil and Kameran DeBarros, Brother-in-law Ernest Flowers all of Boston, MA, god sisters Marie Carter of Mansfield MA, Judith Meadows of Boston MA ,and extended family members Taiwanna, Aisha, and the rest of the Avinger family, Roxie Johnson and the rest of the Johnson/Sims family, The Kelly family and a host of friends to name a few Eric Banks, Andre Brown, Patricia Brown, Anna Lee Brown, Jean Holman, Tammy L. Hill and Geraldine Mitchell.
Her loving, kind heart and generous spirit touched many and will be deeply missed by all. Rest in Peace.
