Leoner Osgood was born on September 23, 1939 to the late Sara and the late Leo Osgood
in Charleston, South Carolina. She was the oldest of three children; the late Leo
Osgood and the late Leila Jackson. Leoner accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord
and Savior and baptized at historical Twelfth Baptist Church, on Shawmut Avenue during
the Reverend Dr. William Hunter Hester era.
Leoner was educated in the Boston Public Schools. After graduation, Leoner married
Edward L. Woodson, Jr. and in this union they had fi ve sons, a daughter and was foster
parent to many children in need. During this time she worked as a caregiver, lunch aide
for the Boston Public Schools and worked on former State Representative Doris Bunte’s
multiple campaigns. Doris and Leoner became the best of friends traveled together.
Later in life she attended Roxbury Community College and went on to continue her education
at Endicott College, where she earned a B.S. degree in nursing. In her ministry
she cared for the elderly, the sick and shut-in. She did tutorial work in the after school
program for the late Father Hastings. In addition, Leoner was a Ward Captain for the
Board of Elections.
Leoner, for many years was a Deaconess at Twelfth Baptist Church, a member of the
Chancel Choir, former president of the now retired Chapel Choir, a member of the Prison
Outreach Ministry, the Dorcas Partnership Ministry, the Kitchen Ministry, and the Churchwomen’s
Fellowship and a soloist for many church events and funerals in the City of Boston.
. Additionally she served on several committees of the American Baptist Churches
of Massachusetts, Inc. (TABCOM). She still found time to be invoked in her community
through volunteering at the Robert Gould Shaw House, Operation Exodus, METCO, and
the Freedom House.
On Saturday, December 19th, after an illness and hospitalization, Leoner was called
from labor to reward. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Edward L. Woodson,
Jr., of 64 years of marriage; sons Charles E. Woodson (Jackie) of Atlanta GA,
Robert L. Woodson (Carrie) Hyde Park, MA, Brian F. Woodson, Fairfi eld, CA, Donald
Woodson, Roxbury, MA, Michael Woodson (Tansy) of Foxborough, MA and daughter,
Donna Woodson of Brockton, MA; Grandchildren Charles, Jr., Robert Jr., Shannon, Brian,
Jr., Melody, Brandon, Michael, II, Tre, Kiara, Lisa, Wesley, Angelica and Nicole. She
has several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews a host of other relatives and friends
including her TBC family. Leoner was godmother to Coletta Mills of Mattapan, MA and
served as a godmother to several other children as well.
