Josephine Ryner, a longtime resident of Quincy Street in Roxbury and, later of Mildred Ave, Mattapan, departed this life on April 9, 2022 at Benjamin Rehabilitation Center in Roxbury, MA following a long illness.
Born in Plymouth, Montserrat (Leeward Islands), to Olivia and George Ryner, Josephine had her formal education there and then taught at Wesley Primary School for a few years. She also was a member of the Plymouth Pilgrim Holiness Church on the island. After migrating to Boston our sister worked at New England Life, an insurance company in Boston, for several years while attending Boston State College on a part time basis. She graduated in the early/mid 70’s and started teaching in the Boston School System for more than 25 years, first at Madison Park High and, later, at Dorchester High. Josephine also volunteered and taught in the Beulah Academic Enrichment Program (BAEP) – an after-school tuition aid program of the Beulah Education Department from 2003 to 2008. She was the Assistant Director.
“Jo”, as she was affectionately called, was the first professional type secretary of Beulah Pilgrim Holiness Church. In addition, she was among the church’s first Bible Institute graduates and, later, became a faculty member. “Jo” also taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School (VBS) for several decades. Our dear sister was the epitome of humility, courtesy with a pleasant personality. She exhibited empathy and a low-keyed disposition. She tended to be slow to speak but quick to listen, often recommending praying about a matter. In a word, Sister “Jo” was an example of a fine Christian woman who touched and influenced many in a positive way – for the Lord. Hers is truly a pleasant memory.
Josephine is survived by her sister Beatrice, nephew Andrew Ryner, niece Veronica, several cousins – including Isabel Harleston - friends and her church family.
