In Loving Memory of Gustavus A. “Gus” Anglin, Jr.

Gustavus “Gus” Anglin, Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, educator, and friend passed away peacefully after a life defined by purpose, love, and integrity.

He was born in Boston on January 24, 1935, to Adina Daley and Gustavus Anglin, Sr., of Jamaica, The British West Indies, Gus grew up in Roxbury, attending Boston Public Schools before graduating from Suffolk University, where he also earned his master’s degree. Though he attended Suffolk Law School, Gus followed his true calling, education.

He began his career teaching math and science at Boston Trade School, later serving as Assistant Principal at Hyde Park High School and Headmaster at the Mario Umana High School during Boston’s desegregation era. Gus was deeply committed to helping young people of color reach their full potential. He later became Headmaster of the John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics and Science, one of Boston’s top exam schools, where he inspired generations of students and educators until his retirement in 2002.

Gus was well-read, loved jazz, and found joy in travel, conversation, and community. A proud member of The Guardsmen, The Bachmars, and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., he cherished lifelong friendships and never lost his authentic, grounded spirit.

He leaves behind his devoted wife Millie of 64 years, his loving sons Scott and Stephen, cherished grandson Quincy, sister Bernice and nephew Earl Johnson.

Gus Anglin, Jr. lived a life of excellence, service, and grace, a true educator, mentor, and gentleman whose impact will live on forever.
