Ellen Grace Dawkins was born on September 12, 1940 to Gus and Navy Dawkins in Edgefield, South Carolina. Grace was one of seven children Essie Smith (deceased), Gus Dawkins, Jr. (deceased), Wade Dawkins (deceased), Mary Dawkins (deceased), Ruth Dawkins and an older brother to which much is not known.
Grace spent her early childhood in South Carolina where she attended the Douglas School in Trenton followed by the Edgefield County Colored School .
In 1963 she moved to Boston where she worked at several jobs a hotel, a hat factory, Necco Candy Company, Honeywell and eventually Raytheon. At Raytheon she started as a machinist and worked her way up to an Inspector. 27 years later she retired.
Sister Grace was also a former member of New Hope Baptist Church where she served on the Usher Board.
“Mum” raised three children two daughters Debra who has preceded her in death, Denitta and a son Anthony. She leaves to cherish her memory granddaughter Aria and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and close friends.
