Florence Wright Obituary

Florence was born on February 23, 1938, to Clarence and Lottie Elizabeth (Wilson) Wright in Boston, MA.  She was the second youngest of 9 children and the baby girl.

Florence attended and graduated from Boston Public Schools and Boston Clerical School, where she learned her skills as a secretary and bookkeeper. Her first job was at Liberty Mutual.  Later at the Boston Redevelopment Authority, her boss, his wife and friend decided to leave and open Grove Hall Day Care.  She left with them to became the bookkeeper and secretary until she retired in 2015.

Florence has been involved and a member of Eliot Congregational Church of Roxbury from attending primary grades in church school until her death.  She raise her children at Eliot, was the secretary at night for Eliot’s “University without Walls” (it’s first school) under Rev. Dr. Virgil Woods and Rev. Prentis Moore. Later, she was an active member of the Just Us Club and a Council at Large member.

Florence loved her children Vallerie and Mark as well as her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her favorite pastimes were traveling, shopping and dancing. Florence would have a suitcase always packed just in case a trip became available. Florence would shop until she dropped.  Recently she and her walker went shopping, sat and rested when she got tired then continued.  Music moved Florence she could always dance. When she was asked how she can dance but barely walk, she said “it was different muscles.” At a cookout last summer when the music was playing one of her favorite songs she walked down the stairs and started dancing in the yard, and became a Facebook sensation.  Even a few days before her passing her brother, Cecil, played her music.  She opened her eyes and smiled.  She had no problem learning all the newest dances.  She also loved good food, and for the past Thanksgivings she enjoyed her niece’s (Louise) cooking and the way she elegantly set her table.

Florence leaves to celebrate her life: her children, Vallerie Hartgrove (Enoch) (of Randolph MA), Mark Wright (Lori) (of Naperville IL) ; her grandchildren, Gabrielle (Geegee) Hartgrove (of Randolph MA) Eliza and Chandler Wright (of Naperville IL); her great grandchildren, Destiny and Danielle Hartgrove-Collins (of Randolph MA); her brothers Cecil Wright (of Jackson MS) and Walter Kuhn (of Maine); and her sister-in-law Ida. She also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins and her Eliot Family.

Florence joins: her parents, Lottie and Clarence; her sisters, Nettie Courcey, Lottie Laney, and Gloria Clark; her brothers, Russell, Warren, Chester and Charles Wright; and her favorite cousin A Robert Phillips, a dinner and travel companion.
