Eddie Mills, the fifth child born to Henry and Mattie Mills, was born November 16, 1931 in Vedenburgh, Alabama. He attended Morning Star Baptist Church and Rosenwald School. After leaving school, he was employed at Vanity Fair Mill. Shortly afterward, he entered the United State Army in 1952, where he served in the Korean War. Eddie was discharged with honors in the rank of Sergeant. Upon leaving the Army, he returned to work at the Vanity Fair Mill. retaining his previous job.
Eddie was the first of his siblings to leave home. In 1956, Eddie moved to Boston MA with his late wife Helen, who had family ties to Massachusetts. His first employment in Boston was a night job at Hampton Court Hotel, and during the day, he attended Boston Trade School for two years. In 1959, he got a job at the Veterans Administration Hospital where through promotions he became the Building Manager Supervisor. After twenty-eight (28) years of service at the V.A. Hospital, he retired in 1987. Eddie was never the type to sit around, so he returned to the work force in 1988, working harder than ever. This time he worked two jobs, and began working at Purity Supreme in the mornings and Eliot Church in the evenings. After Purity Supreme was sold, he was transferred to Stop and Shop at South Bay Shopping Center, and subsequently worked there for (30) years.
He was a resident of Humboldt Avenue, and found his way down the Street and later joined Eliot Congregational Church in 1967 under the leadership of Rev. Prentice Moore. After Rev. Anthony Campbell became Pastor, Eddie became a Deacon and was ordained and took on Role of Chairperson of the Deacon Board. None of this was by accident, because at the age of 16, Eddie was approached by the Pastor of Southern Baptist Church in Alabama to work side by side with him as a Deacon Helper. After 50 + years at Eliot Church he was still faithful active serving member of the Deacon Board, becoming a “Deacon Emeritus” in 2018. Deacon Eddie is affectionately known as the Church “gatekeeper” and was an active member of following organizations: The Men’s Association and the Church Council and also, he tried to sing with the Church Men’s Chorus. He was also the coordinator for Prayer Service every Thursday night. The last activity was his favorite because there’s nothing Deacon Eddie enjoyed doing more than praising and giving thanks to God Almighty-For God has brought us all from a mighty long way.
Eddie is preceded in death by his parents: Mattie and Henry Mills Sr; son: Edward Mills; four brothers: Henry Mills Jr, Johnny Mills Sr, Arnold Mills, and Theodore Mills; two sisters: Dorothy Dennis and Betty Lou Taylor. He leaves to cherish his loving and lasting memories his three sisters: Elois Crook of Dallas TX, Rosie Mae Clausell of Stone Mountain GA, Barbara Ann Washington of Boston MA and one sister in- law Hattie Bell Mills of Slidell, LA; and a host of nieces and nephews and his fellow church members.
