Dorothy Lee Safford affectionately known as Dot or Dottie, age 85 passed away on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 surrounded by her loving family. She was born July 11, 1937 to the late Aquila Newsom in Quincy, Georgia. She was raised in Miami, Florida with her eight younger siblings. Dorothy met the love her life, her late husband James Safford while working at a shipping company in Miami. They wed and decided to relocate to Boston, MA with her eldest son Paris. From this union they had two more children. Vernard and Felicia Safford. Dorothy was a proud loving and caring mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with family as well as sewing, knitting and making quilts for her loved ones.
Dorothy was a survivor. She loved the Lord and accepted him as her Lord and Savior as a young women. She would never miss a moment to tell you how good the Lord was. Her strength alone empowered each generation. Her core values were the foundation of this family. For we know to be absent in the body is to be present with the Lord. Her body may not be amongst us but her legacy will forever remain with us.
Throughout her life Dorothy worked a few jobs, one being a shipping company in Miami and Polaroid in Cambridge, MA as a lens operator for more than 25 years until she retired. Upon retiring she started a successful family transportation company that safely transported children for five years throughout the City of Boston.
Dorothy will be received by her husband James Safford, her son Vernard Safford, her mother Aquila Newsom and her siblings Junior Newsom, Minnie Newsom, Verdell Newsom, Rudy Newsom and Gina Newsom.
Dorothy is survived by her son Paris Swindle and daughter in-law Sherry Swindle, her daughter Felicia Safford-Davis and son in law Ralph Davis; grandchildren Eric Swindle, Tiffany Swindle, Taurin Swindle, Takiyah Woodberry, Shannon Woodberry, Shaylene Spencer, Che'Mara Bennett and Mone't Bennett as well as her great-grandchildren Jasiah Woodberry, Jaylah Woodberry, Quincy Swindle, Skylar Swindle, Langston Swindle and Ayden Bennett-Jackson and her siblings Josephine Newsom, Wendell Newsom and Randolph Newsom.
