Barbara Lopes Obituary

Barbara Ann Monteiro, born September 17, 1927 in Falmouth, MA, the 2nd eldest of the seven children of Frank and Mary Monteiro.

She graduated from Lawrence High School in Falmouth, MA in 1946 and, three years later married George Lopes on January 9, 1949.  George and Barbara were blessed with four children, Cynthia, Carleen, George, Jr., and Sharon. Barbara was a loving mother and was ever so proud of her children.

Barbara was employed as a full time homemaker until her youngest child was of a responsible age.  She had varying professional interests which she was able to pursue, from preparing income taxes to managing the most lucrative department store in Roxbury, Gemini.

A big Red Sox fan, Barbara also loved Cape Verdean music and dance and relaxing with her family. She was also fond of traveling; trips to Foxwoods with her sister Maggie, the beach, and especially time spent with family at her daughter’s home on Martha’s Vineyard. Barbara had a clever sense of humor, and she was always available to provide sound advice.

In January of 2019 Barbara was able to achieve her dream of traveling the land of her forefathers, Cabo Verde, Sao Felipe, Brava and Santiago, along with her daughters and grandchildren. The family was hosted by the Barros Family of Fogo, CV.  This pinnacle moment in Barbara’s life was highlighted when she expressed that she finally felt at home in her family’s native land.

Peacefully, on June 1, 2019, at Season Hospice Care Center in Milton, Barbara passed away surrounded by her family. She was predeceased by her husband George Lopes, Sr. in 1993, her son, George “Lucky” Lopes, Jr., grandson, Clyde W. Jefferson, Jr., sister, Minnie Gomes (George), and brother, Frank Monteiro, Jr.  She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
