Andrew D. McCalop, affectionally known as “Weedie” to family and “Apple” to his friends, was born on February 20th, 1954, in Washington DC to Anne McCalop and Herbert Brooks. Andrew’s younger years were split between Hartford CT and Boston MA mixed with frequent visits to North Carolina.
Andrew attended public school in Hartford and Boston. From early on, Andrew possessed the ability to attract friends, and was always well received. In contrast, if Andrew didn’t care for you, you knew it! As Andrew entered adulthood, he discovered his passion for cooking and worked as a chef in several hotels and restaurants in the greater Boston area but was most remembered for his long-time position at UMass/Boston. In 2002 Andrew relocated to North Carolina. On June 9th, 2004, Andrew became the proud father of his only child Carrie Ann. Becoming a father was truly the happiest day of his life. In the summer of 2018, Andrew returned to Boston and soon took residence in Brookline MA. Carrie Ann joined Andrew within a year.
Andrew was a very social person who would spend hours talking about sports, particularly football and the Patriots. You can guarantee Andrew would have his cold “Colt 45” ready for the game. Andrew also loved music and watching his television shows.
Above all the qualities that we adore about Andrew, his responsibility as a dad to Carrie Anne, is the most admirable.
Andrew is preceded in death by his parents’ Anne and Herbert and a host of uncle’s, aunts and cousins.
Andrew is survived by his daughter Carrie Ann Strong of Mt. Olive, NC., brother, Daymond J. Merricks of Stoughton, MA, nieces Isis L. Merricks, Cassidy F. Williams of Worcester, MA, in-laws, extended family, and friends.
