Alice May McKenzie was born on September 28, 1931 in Thompson Town, Clarendon, Jamaica W.I. She was the tenth of eleven children, born to the late William and Rebecca McKenzie. In her early years, she liked the theater, singing and acting. Her love for the arts earned her a spot as a contestant on the Jamaican Hit Parade, a weekly radio program in the 60’s. Alice won first prize singing Tammy, one of Patti Paige’s song. She also performed on stage with Jamaican popular comedienne’s Bim and Bam. Alice was also a hairdresser and took pride in doing her friends hair.
Alice migrated from Jamaica to the United States on a work program. She settled in Florida where she fulfilled her work commitments and after working for one year she became a permanent resident. Alice left Florida for New York where she worked for many years before joining her sister Henrietta in Boston. Alice was employed at Sherrill House as a Nursing Assistant where she worked for four years.
Alice was kind to everyone and, she would visit Jamaica frequently bringing gifts for family and friends. After her retirement in the United States she returned to Jamaica, however returned to Boston in 2011 when her health diminished. She was admitted to Sherrill House Nursing facility in 2015. During her stay at the facility, Alice favorite activities where crocheting and art work. She gave away her finished products to staff and friend’s on different occasions.
Alice was blessed with a long life and succumbed to her illness on November 16, 2021 at Sherrill House. She will be missed by all who knew her and took care of her at Sherrill House. Although her family loves and misses her sorely, God loves her more. May her soul rest in peace and her light perpetually shine.
Alice is survived by her siblings Henrietta and Eli McKenzie, a host of nieces and nephews as well as many other family and friends.
It is well, it is well with her soul.
