Our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend, Alice G. (Adams) Jones passed away on October 26, 2020, at the age of ninety-four years old, in the comfort of her home.
Alice “Mama” Jones (sixth of twelve children), was born on December 3, 1925, in Millen, Georgia to the late Nehemiah Adams and Wardie Kelsey Adams. In the 1940s, she married her lifelong partner Willie “Papa” Jones Jr., and together with four children - they migrated to Massachusetts, raised their family, and planted roots.
Alice’s greatest joy in life was being of service to the well-being and care of others. Alice served as a Home Health Aide her entire professional career caring for those in need of nursing support and care.
Alice epitomized the word “MOTHER”. By this we mean, she fulfilled every definition, synonym, and benevolent usage of the word - whenever and wherever she was.
To her six children, she was known as “Mommy,” or “Ma.” She adored them, was lovingly firm in her teachings, and taught them important life skills needed to be successful and responsible adults. As fruits of her legacy, one left home prepared, made her proud, honored her commitment to love thy neighbor and community, and if needed - could whip up a batch of homemade soap.
Alice was a life-long member of Concord Baptist Church. To her Concord family, she was known as “Mother Jones,” an esteemed honor and acknowledged gratitude for the years of service to her church family. Throughout the years when called upon - she baked cakes and pies, cleaned-cooked-and blessed the collard greens and cabbage, served dinners, served choirs, was a member of the North Carolina Calendar Ministry, the nurses unit, wiped tears, held hands, provided kind words and hugs, and that happy piece of peppermint to children.
When they say it takes a village to raise a child, “Mama Jones” (as she was fondly known in her neighborhood community and beyond), was a woman that raised a village - Belnel Village. From her famous throne, ‘her front porch’, she watched over her village. She handed out wisdom - and did not mince words in doing so, welcomed new neighbors, shared the harvest from her garden, made sure children at play were safe-and provided them with treats and hugs, babysat for parents, and developed lifelong friendships.
She fed us from her pots, from her heart, from her soul, and with love - A true MOTHER.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Willie Jones, Jr.; children Sammie Gordon, Joe Allen Gordon, Norma Starling, and Bennie McClaney; in addition to eleven sisters and brothers.
She is survived by her son, Carl Jones, and daughter Helena Tonge; grandchildren Karow Gordon, Sabrina Kenny, Salama Gordon-Malotke, Norma Laurent, Yolanda Starling, and Ashley Tonge; great-grandchildren Kayvon Gordon, Jaize Valdez, Maxwell Laurent, Kendall Laurent, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
There will always only be one Alice “Mama” Jones. She has left an indelible mark on her family, community, church, and all who knew her. We will miss her and cherish the fond memories and love she leaves upon our hearts.
Mama Jones was an avid gardener and a diamond to her community. In her loving memory, it would only be befitting that a sprinkle of love be extended to these areas.
