Obituary

Sonia Booker, age 93, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2026. Sonia was born on March 6, 1933, in Christ Church, Barbados, to her parents, William Howell and Enid Jessamy. Alongside her siblings, Rodney Howell, Elizabeth Wilkey, and Dorothy Jackmon, Sonia later moved to New York City and then to Boston, Massachusetts as a young girl, where she would go on to build a life rooted in faith, family, education, and service to others.

Sonia was the loving mother of Enid Booker, John Paul Booker, Carl Booker, Anissa Booker, Jeffery Booker, and Chantee Booker. She is survived by her daughter Anissa Booker, her son Carl Booker, her husband Frederick Casey, her many foster children, as well as the countless children and people she opened her doors and heart to throughout her life. Sonia was preceded in death by her children Enid Booker, John Paul Booker, Jeffery Booker, and Chantee Booker, as well as her 2 grandsons Paris G. Booker, Melvin A. Booker and her parents and siblings.

A lifelong believer in the power of education, Sonia attended Roxbury Community College, where she earned her associate degree, and later Emmanuel College, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree. She dedicated her professional life to the Boston Public School system, serving as a classroom teacher and positively impacting countless students throughout her career.

Beyond the classroom, Sonia was a gifted pianist who shared her love of music by teaching piano lessons to others. She found joy in crocheting, sewing, telling jokes, and sharing stories with anyone willing to listen. Her warmth, humor, and wisdom left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.

Most importantly, Sonia was a devoted Christian and faithful member of Holy Tabernacle Church for many decades. Her faith guided every aspect of her life. Anyone who called Sonia was greeted with her signature phrase, "Praise the Lord," and if asked how she was doing, she would joyfully respond, "I am blessed by the best, not stressed, depressed, or oppressed."

Sonia Booker will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her dedication to family and education, her joyful spirit, and the love she poured into the lives of others. Her legacy will continue through the many lives she touched throughout her remarkable 93 years, which include her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, foster children, and the countless people she welcomed into her home and loved as family.
