Obituary

Ronald Lewis Himes, beloved brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home at 99 Brackett Street, Quincy, Massachusetts.

Born on September 23, 1934, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, Ronald relocated to Boston with his parents during his teenage years. He enrolled in Dorchester High School and was a standout track and field athlete in 1953. After completing high school, he proudly enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served honorably until 1959. He later continued his service in the Army Reserves, retiring with 20 years of combined service and the rank of Staff Sergeant.

A talented culinary professional, Ronald earned his Culinary Arts Certificate from the Massachusetts Restaurant Association in 1970. He received outstanding evaluation reports throughout his military career. On his 1985 evaluation, his military evaluator wrote, "In my estimation, SSG Himes is the best Mess Sergeant in this Brigade." Over the years, he worked as a cook and chef at many notable establishments across the Boston area, including The Sheraton Boston, Logan Airport, Spring Valley Country Club, Marriott Hotel, and the Walnut Hill School in Natick. He also worked as the in-store baker for Edwards Food Warehouse in Dorchester, MA.

Among his many roles, Ronald particularly cherished his 14-year tenure with the Sisters of St. Joseph in Milton, Massachusetts. He often fondly shared stories from his time there with loved ones. He also enjoyed his part-time work at Harborpoint Liquors in Boston, where he formed many lasting friendships.

Ronald was predeceased by his parents, Hillard and Katherine Wheeler Himes; his brothers, Hillard W. Himes and Julian S. Himes; his sister, Shirley Himes Manning; his great-nephew, Rashaan T. Hines; his devoted friend, Ethel Brown; and his beloved cat, Billy, who was his companion for 18 years.

He leaves to cherish his memory two nieces: Shirley Himes Hines (Robert) of Petersburg, VA, and Patricia Himes-Ferris (Paul) of Portland, OR; a nephew, Steven Himes of Brooklyn, NY; great-nieces: Rebecca J. Kariores (Dan) of Weymouth, MA; Tiya R. Hines of Durham, NC; Laurel Boyd (Matthew) of Berlin, Germany; and Alexandria T. Himes-Ferris of Portland, OR; a great-nephew, Christopher M. Himes (Emily) of Lenox, MA and Lyric Himes; great-grandnephews: Devin Campbell (Keyla) of Cranston, RI, and Tyler J. Hines of Fredericksburg, VA; a great-grandniece, Adelia Boyd of Berlin, Germany; and a cousin, Rebecca Allen (Larry) of Dorchester, MA.

He will also be dearly missed by his close friends: Nina and Darrell Lane, Rosalind Streets, Rockzal (Rocky) Lockhart, Jim Vieira, Paul Barry, Peggy Hamilton, Paul Lynch, Theresa Lynch, and Kathryn Willmore.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Beacon Hospice, Cottage Caregivers, and the compassionate staff at Brookdale Quincy Bay Senior Living and Chestnut Park at Cleveland Circle for their devoted care and kindness.
