Obituary

Welcomed by her beloved parents, Raymond G. Cheek Sr. and Katherine M. Cheek, on February 8, 1947, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Pamela Ann Cheek grew up with a strong foundation of family ties, living in a multi-generational home alongside her parents and grandparents. She was the firstborn of four children and the only daughter. Throughout her early formative years, she attended St. Paul A.M.E Church in Cambridge, MA and the historic Twelfth Baptist Church in Roxbury, MA. This is where she would begin to grow a powerful relationship with Christ. Her family eventually left Cambridge and moved to Roxbury, MA. At the age of seven, she began to welcome the first of three brothers into the world, starting with Raymond, Jr., then William Frank, and lastly Gregory Dean.

As a young student, she attended the nation’s first public school system, Boston Public Schools, and graduated from Dorchester High School in 1964, where she took up modeling, dancing, and glee club. She was also a member of the Dorchester Athletic Association (D.A.A). Planning a future at the height of the civil rights movement was not easy for a young Black woman in Boston. Pamela earned her associate's degree and completed the Boston Evening Practical Nursing Program at Northeastern University School of Nursing before continuing to Cambridge College for her MBA. Pam showed her decisive and caring nature that she acquired as a young woman throughout her career as a licensed nurse. She worked for Jewish Memorial Hospital on Townsend Street for close to twenty years in the late 1970s through the 1990s. Amidst her long career, she started a family, which would be her greatest achievement. Her children would prove to be her absolute lifeline. Daughters: Robyn, Jade, and her only son, Raishan, were her pride and joy. Pam lived for her immediate and extended family and tried to maintain the familial foundation her father instilled in her, which was to “keep the family together”. Whether it was through birthday celebrations, Thanksgiving meals, or Christmas parties, gatherings were the method Pamela used to ensure her father’s request lived on, and her family stayed connected.

Leadership was nothing new to Pam, who was the eldest sibling, only girl, and mother of three. She was used to being assertive and strict naturally. She always tried to guide others without a second thought and always stood on principle. If you knew her, then you knew Pam did not play! Pamela was a member at St. Mark Congregational Church, UCC since 1998. She served as Chairperson of the Board of Christian Education, Chairperson of Women's Fellowship, was a member of the nominating committee, Overseer of the Liturgical Dance Ministry, taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, served on the Bereavement Committee and worked as a secretary in the church office when needed. In 2006, Pamela was ordained as a Deaconess at St. Marks, where she led as Head Deaconess of the Diaconate Ministry and remained heavily involved in the church into her later years. In her spare time, she loved being a homebody and watching the Home Shopping Network (which she got honest from her mother), soap operas, any one of the judge, police, or gaming shows, and completing crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed window shopping and traveling with family to new places. Of all her favorite pastimes, family was the nearest and dearest to Pam. She loved endlessly, prayed incessantly, was willing to help anyone in need, and looked for everyone, extending herself to whoever was in need.

Pamela Ann, who was lovingly known as PuggyPot, Pam, Ma, Nana, Auntie, Cousin Pam, and Deaconess, now joins a host of relatives and loved ones who preceded her “homecoming,” including but not limited to her father, Mr. Raymond G. Cheek, Sr., her mother, Mrs. Katherine M. Cheek, her Uncle Richard Richardson, and her younger brother, William F. Cheek. Left to grieve are her brothers: Raymond G. Cheek, Jr and Gregory D. Cheek; her children: Ms. Robyn G. Trammell, Raishan G. Cheek and his wife Chrisalis B. Cheek, and Jade S. (Cheek) Cornelius and her husband Devon M. Cornelius, Sr.; her six grandchildren James J. Anderson, Jr., JaVaughn R. Anderson, Athena L. Cheek, Diego R. Cheek, Devon M. Corneilus, Jr. and Ellora S. Cornelius, her five great-grandchildren: Alanna J. Anderson, Sienna Anderson, Elizabeth Jackson, Kamilla Brito and Niko Haley, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family, friends and Boston community members.
