Oscar Lee
Mitchell, Jr.
May 18, 1940 — Sep 18, 2025
Obituary Oscar Lee Mitchell, born on May 18, 1940, in Tallahassee, Florida, he peacefully made his transition on September 18, 2025, at the beloved age of 85. Oscar lived a full life surrounded by love, family, and friends.
Oscar graduated from Lincoln High School in 1958 marking the beginning of a life defined by hard work, dedication, and a love for learning and family. He proudly served in the United States Army as a sharpshooter. His steady hands and sharp eye reflected the focus and determination he carried throughout his life. After his service, he worked hard in many different roles — from aircraft maintenance agent, to repairing cars at Bates Tire Shop, and doing maintenance at The John Hancock, where he worked faithfully until his retirement.
Oscar had many passions that lit up his days — a love of cars, a deep appreciation for music, cooking, and of course his well-known excitement for the lottery. However, more than anything he loved people. He was a man full of laughter, kindness, and wisdom. To know him was to know a true friend — loyal, caring, and always there when you needed him.
Oscar leaves behind his cherished family: Terrence "Terry" Abercrombie, Charles "Reggie" Abercrombie, Shauna Mitchell, and Corey Mitchell; daughter -in-laws Sherry L. Abercrombie, Calandra White, and Osara Mitchell; siblings Tom Dewberry of Tallahassee, Florida, Andrea Henderson of Baltimore, Maryland, Willie Jean and Miaisha (Mary Mitchell) of Florida; and Sister-in-law Eldora Brown of Berkeley, California.
He was the beloved grandfather of Terrence Blalock, Chester "Aaron" Johnson, Divine and Duquan Waight, Charlone and Charlia Abercrombie, Bobbi Jones, Giovanni Abercrombie, Tevin and Tayasia Abercrombie, Ryan Washington, Daunte' Mitchell, and Gianna Abercrombie. Oscar also leaves behind 15 adoring great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews who will carry forward his love, wisdom, and strength.
Oscar was preceded in death by his loving wife, Viola Mitchell, and his parents, Jessie Mae and Oscar L. Mitchell Sr, brother-in-law Lorenzo Henderson and sister-in-law Paulette Dewberry.
