Oliver N. "Jake" White Jr.'s Obituary
Oliver Nathaniel White Jr., 86, of Boston, MA passed away on Monday, August 4, 2025. Oliver, fondly known as 'Ollie', and by his closest friends as 'Jake' grew up in Roxbury. He was the only son of the late Oliver N. White Sr., and Flora (Berry) White.
He graduated from Brighton High School in 1956 and served honorably in the U.S. Air Force from 1957 to 1961. Upon completing his military service with an honorable discharge, Oliver began a career as a Welder at the Quincy shipyard with General Dynamics, the defense contractor. Following his retirement from General Dynamics, he changed paths and began a new career at Mass General Hospital until fully retiring @ 2005, closing out a hardworking employment record spanning over 40 years.
Jake was the ultimate sports enthusiast, no matter which sport, Basketball-Football-Baseball-Boxing, he was in, and a DEVOTED Boston fan! You could find him sitting in his favorite chair rooting for the Celtics, the Patriots, and Red Sox all season long. He knew every player's name, their position, stats; all up until the very end!
What meant the most to him was family and friends, and for him the 2 were equal. He loved and appreciated the close friendships he had established with his lifelong running buddies since childhood. Jake didn't make friends, he collected brothers. And 1 gentleman in particular, Mr. Winnie Joyner, fondly known as 'Winnie', was the closest to a blood brother he would ever have. They enjoyed life, as young adults partying and hanging out with The Emperors, had lots of laughs and made great memories. He enjoyed those special moments, visiting the Basketball Hall of Fame, attending Red Sox and Celtics games at the old Boston Garden. Later in life. He enjoyed family gatherings at Salem Willows, backyard cookouts and the Holiday dinners. He loved hearing from the little ones on their latest adventures. He also enjoyed the home cooked chili made by his Goddaughter Vanessa, and the holiday meals she prepared for him.
Oliver is survived by his 3 sisters, Barbara Thomas (Dallas, TX), Carolyn Walker (Boston, MA), and Roberta Williams (Boston, MA), three nieces Michelle Henry (Dallas, TX), Karen McMurtry (Brockton, MA) and Beverly Bradsher (Virginia Beach, VA), three nephews, Willie Thomas (Honolulu, HI), Kevin Walker (Avery, TX) and the late Robert Williams Sr. (Boston, MA) and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, godchildren, and others.
We want to extend our sincerest and most heartfelt gratitude to everyone that came to visit him and/or kept him in prayer during his courageous fight.
