Deaconess Lula E. Holley-Harris was born on November 29, 1937, to the late Mary E. Perry Holley and Lindsay Holley in Colerain, North Carolina. She was the second child of eight children. Three of her siblings preceded her in death: Ruth E. Fuller, Lenora Phillips, and Ellis "Smitty" Holley. In 1958, Lula relocated from Edenton, North Carolina, to Boston, Massachusetts. That same year, she joined St. John Missionary Baptist Church. She later became a faithful member of Southern Baptist Church and was ordained as a Deaconess. Her strong faith, unwavering spirit, and love for helping others were constant throughout her life. Lula was united in holy matrimony to the late Joseph C. Harris Sr., and together they shared 53 beautiful years of marriage before his passing in 2014. Their love was steadfast, full of laughter, and often seasoned with a little friendly humor. Joseph used to joke that "she loved bumping her gums on the phone," and if you ever tried to call her, you knew that 617-825-6812 was probably one of the longest-lasting phone number in history—till this day! After all, how else would she have been able to "bump her gums," right LOL! During her years in Boston, Lula was employed by Necco Candy Company in Cambridge. She later worked at Sears & Roebuck in Cambridge and, after retiring from Sears, she continued part-time at the U.S. Postal Service. She had a passion for cooking and was famous for her unforgettable dishes—especially her potato salad, sweet potato pies, collard greens, and beans that could make anyone's day better. If you ever left Lula's home hungry, it was your own fault. Her love for elephants was undeniable, symbolizing wisdom, strength, and loyalty—traits she lived by. Her cherished elephant collection grew every year and became one of her most beloved treasures. Lula leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Robin M. Harris and Karen R. Harris; one son, Joseph C. Harris Jr.; one brother, Larry (Linda) Holley of Edenton, NC; and three sisters, Edith L. M. Holley, Willie B. Maxwell, and Marjorie Miller. A granddaughter Felicia R. Harris and the great grandpup AKA Nana's baby Nahla R. Harris. Two Sisters, Katie Lyons Powellsville of North Carolina and Helen Williams of Colerain, North Carolina.  An Aunt, Gayle Jones of Rochester, NY, and two God Daughters, Stacey Simmons and LaKeisha McKenzie. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends who will forever cherish her love, laughter, and legacy.
