Obituary

Lucille Holmes was born October 9, 1935, in Opelika, Alabama, the last surviving sibling of nine children of the late Finley, Sr. and Idaphene (Rowell). Lucille spent her early years growing up in Opelika and Auburn, Alabama, and at an early age moved to Atlanta, Georgia. She lost her mother as a young child and she and her siblings were raised by their father who made sure they all were rooted in the teachings of the Baptist Church. Lucille faithfully read her Bible and was quick to quote you a scripture.

Following her younger sister, Lucille moved her young family to Boston in 1963, during the Great Migration, allowing for better opportunities. Lucille was very much family-oriented and had a zest for life. She was the sister never afraid to take on anything or anyone. Lucille was a great cook, and her love language was food. She loved having people around her and never hesitated to say, "Come on in and have a seat—are you hungry?" Her children and grandchildren were the light of her life. We have fond memories of cookouts, holidays and family reunions. She was an avid bowler and bingo player and after retirement embarked on many cruises with her longtime friend, Paulette McCarthy.

Lucille retired from the now defunct Jordan Marsh Company after many years working as an accountant in the auditing department. With her grace and wit, she was well-known and respected throughout the company. Lucille's earthly presence graced our lives until her Heavenly Father called her home on the afternoon of January 5, 2024, surrounded by family, to reunite with her parents and siblings Annie Mae Felton, Geneva Hentley, Ernestine Reed, Samuel, John, Ernest, Oliver and Finley Holmes Jr.

Rejoicing in life-long memories of Lucille, but with sadness at her earthly departure are sons Michael, Timothy and Kenneth Holmes, and daughters Debbie and Celeste Holmes. Lucille was preceded in death by her oldest and youngest daughters, Shirley Holmes-Sweeting and Alfreda Holmes-Prince. Also mourning her passing are grandchildren Garland Sweeting (Dionne), Nershi "Nikki" Henderson, Leigh Jackson (Sean), India Holmes, Jason Smith, James Rashad Prince, Ashley Vassall, and Brandon Prince, great-grandchildren Isiah, Elijah and Makayla Sweeting, Korrell Prince, Auriana Jackson, and Jalil Weekes.
