Born in Boston, Massachusetts on August 18, 1927, Louise Bynoe, wife of the late John Garvey Bynoe, departed this life on August 20, 2026.

A devoted social worker, community leader, and lifelong advocate for children and families, Louise passed away leaving behind a legacy defined by service, compassion, and unwavering commitment to others. Born to Emma Cook and Augustus A. Granville, Sr., Louise grew up in a close-knit family alongside her beloved brothers Augustus A. Granville, Jr., Milton E. Granville and Clarence V. Granville, Sr. She was the steady presence who kept her family connected, nurtured traditions, and ensured that every gathering—large or small—was filled with warmth, laughter, and a sense of belonging. Her commitment to family was as strong as her commitment to community, and she carried both with grace.

Louise’s early education began at the Lewis School, followed by Roxbury Memorial High School for Girls, where her academic promise and leadership first took shape. She continued her studies at, and graduated from, Wilberforce University in Wilberforce, Ohio. She later earned her Master’s degree from the Boston College School of Social Work, a milestone that set the foundation for her life’s calling.

Inspired by her brother Gus’s experience with polio, Louise pursued a career in medical social work with a deep sense of purpose. Throughout her career, she worked tirelessly on behalf of foster children, adopted children, and families navigating complex social systems. Her professional journey included impactful roles at the Family Services Association of Lawrence, the Boston Redevelopment Authority, Model Cities, the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health, and ultimately the American Cancer Society, where she served as Director of the William B. Price Unit.

Louise’s influence extended far beyond her professional work. She was a proud and dedicated member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Boston Alumnae Chapter, joining in 1949 and remaining active for decades. Her commitment to enriching the lives of others was reflected in her service on the boards of the Roxbury Multiservice Center, Cooper Community Center, and the Roxbury YMCA, as well as her involvement with the League of Women for Community Service. Her leadership, generosity, and steady presence strengthened countless organizations and touched innumerable lives.

Outside of her public service, Louise embraced life with joy and curiosity. She was an avid reader, a spirited Scrabble player, and a devoted fan of Boston’s sports teams—especially the Red Sox. She enjoyed monthly luncheon gatherings with the “Lunch Bunch,” delighted in jazz music, and loved hosting lively house parties where laughter and friendship filled the room.

Louise will be remembered for her sharp mind, her warm heart, and her steadfast dedication to improving the lives of others. Her legacy lives on in the communities she strengthened, the families she supported, and the many people who were fortunate enough to know her.

Louise leaves behind two sons, Jonathan Kevin Bynoe and James Bynoe, daughter in law Lisa Bynoe, granddaughters Jordan Bynoe and Marissa Bynoe, Marissa’s husband Michael Fiorentino, nephews Clarence Granville, Jr., Charles Granville, Charles’ wife Gail Granville, cousins Carolyn Brown and Julma Edge, of Chicago, among the many relatives and friends who truly loved her and will miss her.
