Obituary

Janet Y. Johnson-Smith, 81, passed away peacefully March 10, 2026, welcomed by the family members that went on before her. As a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother, and joyful great‑grandmother, she built a life defined by strength, independence, compassion, curiosity, and unwavering devotion to the people she loved.

Born in Tewksbury, MA however claiming Boston, Janet grew into a woman whose presence and personality made every room brighter. Janet received a master's from UMass Boston where she counselled women with abuse history along with inmates transitioning back into society. She was also an accomplished author penning "And So My Son..." as well as multiple unpublished titles. As a gifted author, she poured her life's experience and insight onto the page, leaving behind her tale of stories that will continue to inspire and comfort those who read them. Writing was not just her craft but her way of connecting and sharing pieces of herself with the world.

She married the love of her life, Lizzie Smith-Johnson, with whom she shared a relationship with for over 35 years, rooted in laughter, resilience, and a quiet, enduring love and understanding of one another. Janet's family was always her greatest source of pride and made it a point to voice this in every conversation.

As the matriarch she nurtured with patience and wisdom delighting in milestones, stories, and every small hand slipped into hers. Her home was a place of comfort, where conversations were heard, opinions given and lessons passed down with elegance and laughter. Everyone always felt welcomed.

Janet was predeceased by her mother Marion Johnson Brown, sons Dwayne and Brent, Jr., and her daughter Brenita.

Janet is survived by her wife Ruth, daughters Patrice, and Tiombe' Nikai, 18 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren, 2 sisters: Barbara and Cloretta, and a host of nieces and nephews.
