Obituary

Our beloved James Horace ("Jim", "Hunkey") White, age 85, of Dorchester Massachusetts departed this earthly life on August 21, 2024. Jim, as he was affectionately called by his wife, was born in Windfall, North Carolina on June 23, 1939 to the late Nellie Ferebee White and James Horace White Sr. He was one of 11 children. Siblings preceding him in death were Mary B. Hardy, Mary I. Burns, Wilson Leroy White, Charlie W. White, Thomas G. White, Herman G. White, Annie Ruth Harris, Alisha J. White, and Lautina B. White.

Jim attended the public schools in Perquimans County, NC; then he joined the United States Army where he served for three years. After his military career he relocated to Boston, Massachusetts. It was in Boston where he met the love of his life, Virginia D. Walton, and they married on December 24, 1963. Jim worked as a custodian for many years, and ultimately retired from City of Boston. He was a proud Mason with the Hiram Grand Masonic Lodge, where he worked with compassion and a sense of commitment.

James accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior very early in his life. He later continued his spiritual journey at The Historic Charles Street A.M.E. Church. While there he served in various capacities, some of them were; an Usher, Class Leader, Trustee and Senior Steward until his death. In addition to singing in the Richard Allen Brotherhood Choir, as a child he enjoyed singing with his late brothers and his late father. He always told the story of his father having each of them learn a song from the radio by the time he got home from work. Jim enjoyed engaging in musical activities, singing and praising of the Lord.

Jim leaves to cherish his memories; wife of 60 years, Virginia D. Walton White of the home, two children; Darrow J. White (Mercedes), of Cheshire Connecticut, Rashedia M. Watson (Darren) of Pine Hill, New Jersey; two grandchildren David J. and Matthew A. of Connecticut; A sister, Anita Freeman (Quincy) of Hertford, NC and brother, Herman White of Virginia; Sisters-in-law, Addie W.
