Gwendolyn Lewis was born in Boston Massachusetts on March 15, 1940 and reared by her paternal grandmother, the late Charlotte Lewis. She attended Boston Public Schools and graduated from the University of Massachusetts at age 66, fulfilling her desire to obtain a college degree. She worked for several years in the insurance sector prior to feeling called to full-time Christian service. She worked a number of years as a staff member in the Central Office of the Twelfth Baptist Church in Roxbury Massachusetts. Most recently she retired from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as secretary to the Commissioner at the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind.

At the age of seventeen Gwen accepted Christ as her personal Savior and Lord. She acknowledged that she needed God in her life. In 1972, she joined the fellowship of Twelfth Baptist Church (TBC). Throughout these years, she served on the Deaconess Board, The Board of Missions, the Fellowship of Concerned Christians, the Flower Club, several committees and she co-founded the Book Ministry. Gwen was blessed and gifted with the knowledge and love of the Holy Scriptures. Gwen shared this calling as she regularly taught Sunday School at TBC.

The Richest Woman in the World is how Gwen would refer to herself because she had everything she needed and more. She knew that God carried her throughout her life. She said that the bounty that was bestowed upon her was astounding. Her favorite poem was 'Footprints in the Sand'.

She will be remembered for her encouraging ways and her ready smile. Gwen always had a message or a story to encourage or to make a point. She was treasured for her unwavering willingness to help others and share information. Gwen was a writer and she beautifully crafted poems, quips, short stories and narratives that she shared with so many.

Music was an integral part of who Gwen was. She would burst into delightful singing if a song or a thought tickled her memory of tunes and hymns. She played piano for a small church she attended years ago. Many may remember the player piano at her grandmother's house. That piano traveled with Gwen wherever she could take it and now it has a revered place in the home of Arthur and Sissy.

Gwen spent loving time at the end of her life surrounded by the warm and caring environment that Linda and Jeffrey provided for her. Her good friend Sue took her to the beach for lunch and the view of the water most Mondays and she visited her several times a week until she passed. Gwen was visited often by many relatives and friends, a reflection of who she was and how she touched us.

She is remembered by a host of relatives and friends who she often referred to as the best family in the world. Gwen is survived by siblings Barbara Ann Greene, George (Butch) Semper, Assonia (Twinkle) Wilson, Christopher Semper, Lucille Dandridge, Jeannette Gerald, Reverend Arthur Gerald and a host of relatives, extended family and friends.
