Gayle M. Belcher-Guilford was born on January 16, 1954 in Boston, Massachusetts to the late Richmond Belcher of Virginia and the late Sadie Belcher (Moore) of Georgia. Gayle was the oldest of three girls. Gayle's life was one defined by resilience and a profound commitment to helping others.

Gayle attended Lexington Public Schools as one of METCO Inc., first participants during our nation's most infamous period of desegregation of schools. Later, Gayle would attend Boston Public Schools entering Hyde Park High School. These experiences inspired Gayle to study Psychology at American International College and dedicate herself to giving back to those in need. Gayle was a Social Worker for over two decades. She last worked with women and children who survived domestic violence and were seeking a fresh start at Horizons. She found great personal fulfillment in this work as well as in her hobbies of shopping and skincare. Even while battling cancer, she provided resources to her fellow patients and used her immense knowledge of the system to advocate for them as well. Additionally, during this time Gayle was determined to start an empowerment group for young girls. This was Gayle — a force to be reckoned with and a woman who lived life according to her own terms. A woman who defied the odds presented to her, even making cancer wait until she finished her work, before it could have its time.

Undoubtedly, the tenacity and strong will that Gayle personified throughout her life served her well and is what kept her through life's toughest moments and challenges. These qualities coupled with her infectious smile and giving spirit were admired by many and can be seen directly reflected in her children.

Gayle took great pride in her Native American heritage, love for Black history, and her lived experiences of both. She made it a point to share her wisdom with her children, grandchildren, and anyone she encountered. However, Gayle's greatest pride and her legacy were her children and grandchildren. Gayle's children, Charlene, Stephanie, Jarrod, Gayle, and Eleanor, and their families were the foundation of her living joy. Through them and their children, she imparted her sense of self, satisfaction, and history in this life. Simply, she was a proud mother and grandmother who never missed a moment to boast about the lives her children had carved out for themselves and the educational milestones they and her grandchildren had achieved.

On May 31, 2024, Gayle was reunited with her parents and her late husband Donald Guilford after a four-year battle with breast cancer. Gayle will be deeply missed, but her spirit of advocacy, commitment to the betterment of young people, and passion for education will live on through her children and grandchildren.

Gayle is survived by her Children: Charlene Frasier (Toy) of Woodbridge, VA, Stephanie Everett (William) of Boston, MA, Jarrod Fonfield (Michelle) of Boston, MA, Gayle Michelle Adams (Carl) of Charlotte, NC and Eleanor Guilford of Boston, MA. Sisters: Janis Belcher of Boston, MA and Shelia Finch (Warren) of Smyrna, DE. Grandchildren: Anaija Hardmon, KiShayla Fonfield, Sadie Hardmon, Tamara Frasier, Jaylen Fonfield, Jordyn Fonfield, Ravyn Everett, Tiffany Frasier, Christopher Everett, Journey Fonfield, Isabella Everett, Justice Fonfield and Carl Adams III. Nephews: Lamont Belcher (Stephanie), Richmond Belcher, Mason Hinton; Gerrod Barrett Nieces: Zoe Belcher; Charlie Belcher, Brooke Belcher Cousins: Nogomo (Rodney) Belcher, the Tyler Family, Nataki Burke and a host of family and friends that she loved and held dearly to her heart.

The family will hold a private ceremony on Friday, June 14, 2024 at St. Michael Cemetery. The Homegoing Celebration of Gayle's life will take place on Saturday, June 15, 2024, 3:00 p.m.- 7:00 p.m. at the home of daughter Stephanie Everett, 197 Manchester Street, Mattapan, MA. All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, Gayle requested that donations be made in her honor to the Home for Little Wanderers and/or MSPCA.
