Dr. Everett Anderson, affectionately called Andy, transitioned peacefully from this life on May 22, 2024, at the age of 95. He was born in Houston, Texas, August 12, 1928, the fifth of seven children of the late Armstrong Anderson, Sr., and the late Jewel Mary (Pryor) Anderson.

The owners of the Lorino Grocery Store were very supportive of his educational aspirations. At the tender age of seven years old, he got his first job at the grocery store, setting the foundation for his moral beliefs of hard work and dedication. Along with great work ethics, Dr. Anderson became a devout Catholic at an early age.

Dr. Anderson attended Houston public schools and graduated from Jack Yates High School in 1945. He continued his education by attending Fisk University, earning a B.A. in 1949 and an M.A. in Zoology in 1951. He received a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Iowa in 1955. In 1972, Dr. Anderson obtained a M.A. with honors from Harvard University School of Medicine. He did postdoctoral work in gross anatomy at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Colorado.

Additionally, Dr. Anderson conducted postdoctoral research in Cytology-Histology at the State University of Iowa (1955-56) and in cell biology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine (1956-57). He also spent a significant amount of time in Woods Hole, MA, at the Oceanographic Institution, the Marine Biological Laboratory and the Woods Hole library that is internationally recognized as defining current trends and practices in the marine information sciences and informatics.

Dr. Anderson spent a lifetime working in academia. He served as a professor at several universities, including Howard University School of Medicine, the State University of Iowa, and the University of Massachusetts. However, he spent most of his career at Harvard University (1972-2022), working as a professor and associate director of various departments and laboratories concentrating on human reproduction, comparative anatomy, endocrine sciences, cell and molecular physiology, and cell biology.

Dr. Anderson authored over 133 publications and was a member of, and/or chaired, over 50 societies and committees.

His honors include being appointed to the National Advisory Council on General Medical Sciences (1975), receiving the Faculty Prize for Excellence in Teaching at Harvard University Medical School (1986), and being named the James Stillman Professor of Comparative Anatomy and Cellular Biology and Associate Director of Laboratory of Human Reproduction at Harvard Medical School in 1990. He was honored to work with Dr. Don Fawcett (Investigated Sperm Development, Harvard University), Dr. H. W. Beams, Professor of Zoology at the State University of Iowa (Advisor, Counselor and Confidant), and Gloria Y. Lee, Research Associate, Harvard University School of Medicine.

Each year, Dr. Anderson spent at least six weeks in the Caribbean relaxing and reading books in preparation for the upcoming semester. While he had no biological offspring, Dr. Anderson mentored his students, some of whom became like family.

Dr. Anderson was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings: Allen, James, Myrtle Evans, Edna Marie Frenes, and Armstrong, Jr. He leaves to cherish his memory his sister, Narvel Ridley (Richmond, VA), and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
