Dorothy Lee
Johnson
Jan 1, 1938 — Oct 9, 2025
Roxbury
Dorothy L Johnson was born January 1, 1938, to the late Cecil J. and Lillian Legette Foxworth in Marion County, South Carolina.
Her early years were shaped by the strong foundations of family, love and faith. She attended Marion County Schools and later graduated from Marion High School in 1956. Upon completing high school, she furthered her education at a trade school, where she earned her certification in cosmetology.
Dorothy met the love of her life, the late Alton L. Johnson and they formed a union on December 25, 1958. Soon after, she relocated to Boston, Massachusetts, and started her professional journey. She began working her first job at Summit Nursing Home where she had the opportunity to provide care and comfort to residents through her daily help with cleaning and dressing. She eventually pursued a different path and built a career at Polaroid assembling cameras.
She went on to open Dorothy's Daycare, a home-based daycare where she lovingly cared for children for over 20 years. She treated every child as her own—teaching, nurturing, and showing love daily. She retired when her husband became terminally ill, dedicating her time to his care. After the passing of her husband, Dorothy decided to become a foster parent. She made such and impact that she was recognized by the Northeast Centers for Youth and Families INC.
From an early age, she was taught the unwavering love of God and devoted her life to serving Him. Dorothy joined Grant A.M.E. in 1962 under the leadership of Reverend R.L. Pruitt. She was a faithful member of Grant A.M.E. Church for many years, attending regularly until her health no longer allowed. During her time there, she served in many capacities, always with a humble and giving heart. She faithfully served the various ministries such as Missionary (Emeritus), Steward Board, Lay Organization, Trustee Board Number One, Mass Choir, Anniversary Choir, and Senior Choir. She also served as Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent of Sunday School. Her unwavering dedication and commitment were recognized when she was honored for her faithful service in these various roles. One special award she was honored to receive was "Mother of the Year" from Grant A.M.E. Daughters of Sarah Ministry.
Even though she is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters and two brothers her legacy will forever live on through: her children Delton, Waundolyn, Durrell and Regina; her grandchildren, her great-grandchildren, her godchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of family members and friends.
Dorothy L Johnson lived a life of faith, authenticity, love and devotion.
