Today, we gather to celebrate the life of a remarkable woman, our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and dear friend, Deborah Straughter. On Sunday, October 8, 2023, Deborah passed away in her hometown of Boston, Massachusetts, following a courageous and enduring battle with cancer. Despite the relentless challenges inflicted on her body by cancer, she continued to radiate joy through her infectious laughter, quick wit, and a heart overflowing with love. Her absence leaves a void that no words can fill.

Deborah's journey began on June 12, 1950, in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts. She is now reunited with her parents, the late Justice Thomas (Straughter) Muhammad and Pearl Tibbs as well as Deborah's son, Shane Straughter, and her brother, Eric Straughter. Deborah leaves behind a legacy of love and strength through her blended family. Members of her family include daughters, Micko Copeland, Shamele Straughter, Teyarnna Straughter, her husband Patrick Wilkinson, Nickiesha Straughter, Shayla Straughter, her husband Darien Askew; along with her protective and caring brothers Vanthomas Straughter, his wife Euvelle Sueneetta Straughter, Sulieman Muhammad, his wife Aminah Muhammad, Ricky Barnes, his wife Lachelle Barnes, Justin Barnes, and Louis Barnes. Deborah's love extended to numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and even a great grandchild. In addition to her immediate family, Deborah's compassionate heart reached far and wide. She embraced the role of mother and cherished friend to countless foster children, leaving a profound impact on their lives.

As the only girl of the Straughter clan, Deborah was fiercely protected by her brothers who remained that way until her dying day. Over many holiday dinners featuring the cakes and pies that Deborah was known for, one could hear the siblings recount stories of their childhood adventures. These tales would often detail how the brothers saved Deborah from getting in trouble or letting down a young man who was interested in dating her.

Like her parents, Deborah had a strong work ethic and appreciation for education. Deborah's educational path led her through Jeremiah E. Burke High School and some higher-level courses at Cambridge College. She began working at a young age in her family's multiple businesses, including but not limited to, Prime Roast Beef and Prime Supermarket. Deborah later worked for Raytheon and later pursued a career as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).

At the age of 49, Deborah faced a daunting challenge, suffering a stroke and within a year, received the life altering cancer diagnosis. Defying medical odds, Deborah bravely fought cancer for 23 years exemplifying an unwavering determination and unyielding spirit. Deborah Straughter's memory will forever shine brightly in our hearts, an enduring testament to the power of love, resilience, and the profound impact one can make on the lives of others. In celebrating her life, we also celebrate the love, strength, and inspiration she bestowed upon us all.
