Beloved Father, Grandfather and Brother

Charles "Chuck" VanAllen, Jr., was born on July 20, 1939 and earned his wings in peace on May 20, 2026. He leaves behind a legacy of love, wisdom and cherished memories that will continue to inspire generations.

Chuck was the first born of the late Charles R. VanAllen and Helen Enos Van Allen, followed by his siblings, David (deceased), Carol (deceased), Bruce, Emily, and Denise. Later he gained two younger siblings, Keith and Michelle. He grew up in Roxbury, Orchard Park. Being a student was not his passion, but he had a gift for business. He bought his first business, A Bakers Dozen, and made it his own and operated his doughnut shop for about six years in Brighton, MA. Then, he found his true calling, becoming a dynamic force in Boston, MA nightlife from the 1970's through early 2000's. He bartended and built iconic bar atmospheres such as, Slade's (starting in the Bill Russell era), Riley's Down Under, and Estelle's. He returned to Slade's in the 1990's, his final venue, and elevated it to a household name.

After the nightlife was done, he enjoyed a full retired life. He was a well-known figure in Hampton, NH. He cut his grass, cultivated his poolside experience, and had some epic barbeques. He enjoyed having family over, where there was always a drink, a burger, hot dog and lots of laughs. With his partner, Mitzi, he touched the posh life, traveling, and fine dinners. We know he could never sit still; he worked at Home Depot for the last 3 years making friends and enriching yet another community.

He was a tireless working man, a "busy beaver", and he dedicated his special brand of genius to every business he touched. He was a man who eld by example, reflecting the character of the Silent Generation into which he was born, and often he kept many intimate aspects of his life private. To really know him was to meet everyone he loved; put his loved ones together and you would see the sum of his parts, a beautiful mosaic. He was the heart of his family. He wanted his children to live better than he did and along the way instilled invaluable life lessons, empowering younger generations to navigate life's complexities with confidence and hope.

Chuck is survived by his siblings: Bruce VanAllen (Mary) of Boulder, CO, Emily Thomas of East Providence, RI, Denise VanAllen of Quincy, MA, and Michelle Johnson of Hyde Park, MA; his sons: Craig, Sr. (Felicia) VanAllen of Randolph, MA, and Michael (Tracy) VanAllen of Jamaica Plain, MA; five grandchildren: Lucy VanAllen, Amanda VanAllen, Craig VanAllen, Jr., Cameron VanAllen, Chanel Cowan-Cummings, and Arianna VanAllen; six great-grandchildren; his goddaughter: Lydia Dyett; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. The love of his life of more than 40 years, Marion "Mitzi" Prout, went home before him on January 19, 2026; we know he is happy to be with her again.
