Obituary

Charles S. Pettway was born on April 2, 1938, in Wilcox County, Alabama to the late Araina King Pettway and Pierce Pettway.  He passed away in Milton, MA on Friday, October 18, 2024, surrounded by his family.  Charles (affectionately known as "CS", "Charles", "Son" and "PA"). Charles was a beloved father, husband, brother and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Charles received his education in public schools in Wilcox County, Alabama. After completing high school, Charles enjoyed spending time in Alabama and worked various jobs to provide for his family. Charles was known as "a provider " for his wife and children.

Charles met the late Lizzye Gray (Pettway–Steward) as a teenager. They married and relocated to Boston, MA in 1957. They had seven children together. Charles worked as a cab driver for several years. He made a point to not allow the children to go anywhere unless he picked them up. He enjoyed talking to his children and telling them stories.

He later met his wife Alice (Frederick - Pettway) and they married in 1975. They shared "49" years together and adopted their daughter, Sabrina (Pettway) Chery. They raised three children together. Charles embodied strength, independence and unconditional love. His greatest accomplishment was his children.

Charles spent the majority of his career working at Raytheon, as a custodian.  Throughout his career, he was known for his hard work, compassion, and friendly attitude.

Charles loved to make people laugh. He was very passionate about his "Red Sox"; however, he never wanted to go to a game, as he reported he enjoyed his game in "peace" at home. In his free time, Charles enjoyed playing spades with his family, playing the lottery (scratch tickets) and attending weekly gatherings every Sunday at Bingo. Charles was a very humble loving man. He did not like any kind of trouble, arguing, fighting, etc. When anything negative was happening, he would just wave it off with a frown saying, "I don't know why people act like that".

Charles was proceeded in death by his parents, grandmother, Eliza Booze, and brothers, Leroy Pettway (Alice), Lavorn Pettway, his grandson Rashaud Pettway, his granddaughter Samantha Smith and, his, stepson, Pepi Frederick.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Frederick-Pettway; his brothers, Ronnie Pettway (Mary), Woodrow Pettway (Leda), his sisters, Audrey Merity;  Odell Stanford, his children --Sharon Pettway-Moody, Sheila Pettway-Harper (Egerton), Carlton Pettway (Patricia), Cassandra Pettway-Johnson (George), Gary Pettway (Dorothy), Pamela Pettway, Kimberly Pettway, Sabrina Chery-Pettway (Elisee) and Tiffney Smith; his grandchildren - Michael Pettway, Carlton Pettway, II, Richmond Johnson, Jamaal Pettway, Chyna Johnson, Taymara Pettway, Shaakira Harper, Reginald Pettway-Foster, Gary Pettway, Jr., Jonathan Pettway, Reese Pettway, Sharon Pettway, Elias Chery, Elisha Chery, Ellie Marie Chery,  Tawanna Smith and Sydney Smith; and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, family members and friends.
