She lived a full and valorous life filled with family generosity, close friendships and adventurous work experiences throughout her lifetime. Carrie Lewis, who had been in declining health for several years, passed away quietly on July 30, 2026, in Boston, Massachusetts.

Carrie was born on Sept. 13, 1949, in St. George, SC where she grew up with several siblings and cousins. She left the city as a teenager to join the Job Corps education and training program in Davenport, Iowa after becoming a young mother. Then, after earning her high school diploma and completing the program there, Carrie chose to relocate to Boston rather than return to South Carolina or seek further opportunities in Chicago or California.

Carrie continued her higher education in the Boston area. She earned an associate degree from Graham Junior College in 1973, an accounting certificate from Northeastern University in 1975 and then in 1984 a secretarial certificate from the Boston Technical Center.

It was in Boston where she met and married the late Errol Clarke in 1967. The couple later divorced in the 1980s.

Her varied work experiences included a successful tenure with The Gillette Co., where she held several positions that included payroll record clerk, senior promotional payments clerk and credit associate before she retired. She made several close friends there with whom she kept in touch with throughout her life.

Carrie was blessed with growing up with three sisters and a brother, whom she sponsored by financing their relocation from the South to Boston and by taking them in until they could get on their feet. She was always known for her good nature and having a benevolent spirit toward family and friends alike. That essence of kindness and generosity was especially present during Carrie’s favorite pastimes of shopping and visits to play slot machines at nearby casinos.

Carrie’s parents were the late Emma Mae Brothers of St. George and Hansell Berrien Sr. of Valdosta, Georgia Although she was raised by her late stepfather, Henry A. Brothers, later in life she rejoiced in meeting her biological father and her additional siblings: Henry (Ponjoe) Berrien Jr., Belinda Berrien and Romona Berrien (deceased) all of St. Petersburg, Florida.

She is survived by her close sisters Laura Brothers of Boston and Armie J. Mikell (Willie) of South Carolina, sister-in-law Yvette A. Brothers of Boston, beloved daughter Angela Burrell and grandsons Christopher Burrell and Samuel Burrell from California, as well as granddaughter Olivia Agard-Clarke of Florida. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles in various parts of the country.

Carrie was predeceased by her beloved brother Heyward and dear sister Ruth, with whom she was raised. Her cherished son, Allan D. Clarke, preceded her in death in 2012.
