Calvin Emanuel was born on October 9, 1944 to the late Berkley and Myrtle Emanuel,  grandson of Roberta and Cash Miles of Marion, South Carolina. Calvin grew up in Marion SC and graduated from Johnakin High School in 1962.  Calvin continued his education and was a proud graduate of South Carolina State College in 1966 where he was a music and education major.  He played the trumpet in the SCSC Marching 101.  His love of music continued through his life.  He could often be found in the summer enjoying Keb Mo in his backyard.

Calvin earned a master's degree in counselling from Francis Marion University. Calvin Married Beverly Fishburn in 1967 and to this union came one son Calvin J Emanuel, PhD in 1971.

Calvin began his career as a teacher in public school system in Summerville SC, Alston High School and later moving to Darlington SC where he taught at Mayo High 1967 - 1980.  One of Calvin's proudest moments was when his band was invited march to the Cherry Blossom parade in Washington DC in 1973.

Calvin was initiated into Chi Iota chapter of Omega Psi Phi in 1970. He was active for many years and enjoyed the fraternal fellowship.

After separation from his first marriage, Calvin relocated to Boston where he was surrounded by a strong contingent of the Miles family.  Calvin and Clara Holley were united in marriage in 1986, and together they built a loving family with her children, Michelle and Maurice Holley.

Calvin continued working in the education field and then moved into leadership in the state healthcare management industry.  He retired from the state in 2014.  Calvin remained active after retirement by serving on the Board of Central Boston Elders Service.  He continued his passion of service to others by becoming a crossing guard for the City of Boston.  He enjoyed each day as a crossing guard and would share how the smiles of his "little munchkins" would brighten his day.

While in Boston, Calvin became an active member of the Eliot Congregational Church of Roxbury.  He truly enjoyed the fellowship of the Men's association where he held multiple positions.  His favorite activity was to support the exterior maintenance of the Church grounds.

When Calvin was not working, he enjoyed fishing with his friends.  He was a skilled angler and would often catch more fish than he could eat.  His fishing stories with his friends, their adventures in the fog, and boat challenges were priceless.  Calvin was also an avid chef on the grill and smoker.  He would smoke ribs and turkeys year-round in the sun and snow and would readily share the fruits of his labor.

Calvin is survived by his wife Clara Holley-Emanuel and by his brother James Miles and sister-in-law Bessie Miles. Children – Michelle Holley (Anthony W Woods), Maurice Holley, and Calvin J. Emanuel, PhD (Sonja Emanuel).  Grands - Calvin J Emanuel, Sabrina Hargett, Anthony W Woods, Camryn Z Emanuel. Nieces – Tracie Miles, Felicia Miles. Nephews – Terrance Miles and an abundance of friends and family who love Calvin.
