Obituary

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Matthew 5:16 Sis. Bernice Leatherwood was born in Warwick, Georgia on June 7, 1927. She departed this life on September 15, 2024, at the age of 97.

Sis. Leatherwood left Georgia and came to Boston in 1948 where she met and married her late husband, Mr. James Leatherwood. Her love for Jehovah led her to unite with the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Hyde Park, MA where she remained a faithful witness.

Sis. Leatherwood always strove to do her best - not just for herself, but also for others. She brought her mother (Mrs. Sallie Sutton) and stepfather (Mr. James Sutton) to Boston, seeking a better life for them. She encouraged her sister (Mrs. Bertha Harvey) to come as well. In fact, it was her courage and determination for the betterment of her family that led a large portion of them to make the journey to Boston. As a result, so many have thrived from her example.

Sis. Leatherwood first worked at the VATCO Auto Seat Cover Co. as a seamstress, but progressively stretched herself towards greater goals. She wanted to care for people - to help them heal. She worked hard to procure a job at Boston City Hospital, and, then thereafter, at Mattapan Hospital on River Street. But this was not all.

Sis. Leatherwood opened her home to two women, in particular, who had no one to care for them—Mrs. Murray and Ms. Dorothy Boose. She attended to each as if they were her own mother and sister. This is the witness borne by Sis. Leatherwood.
