In Loving Memory of Barbara Rosemarie Malcolm September 2, 1961 – February 23, 2025

Barbara (Babs) Rosemarie Malcolm, the beloved firstborn daughter of Aubrey Joslyn Malcolm and the late Reita Louise Malcolm, was born on September 2, 1961, in Kingston, Jamaica. She was raised in a large, loving family well known throughout the community for their generosity—a virtue she admired and carried throughout her life.

At the age of eight, Barbara migrated to Massachusetts with her family, sponsored by her loving aunts, the late Lucille, Edna, and Iris Follett. Alongside her parents and three younger siblings—Merna, Carlfred, and Michael—she embarked on a journey that would shape her future. Shortly after their arrival, her youngest sibling, Alexia, was born, completing their family.

From a young age, Barbara embraced the caretaker role with unwavering love and devotion. She had a natural gift for nurturing, ensuring that every holiday and special occasion was meaningful for her siblings. Her heart for giving and her deep commitment to others became the foundation of the remarkable life she built.

Barbara attended Beethoven School in West Roxbury for elementary and middle school before continuing her education at Madison High School. She began her college studies at Northeastern University but paused her academic pursuits to welcome her first child, Patrick, with the late Douglass "Peter" King, the father of her children. Over the years, her family grew with the births of Shauntelle, Duwayne, Areitah, and Aubrey—each one blessed to be raised with her unwavering dedication and love.

Even while raising her children, Barbara extended her heart and home to countless others. She became a foster mother through the Mentor Program, caring for over 20 children, many of whom remained in close contact with her. Beyond fostering, she embraced children from the community as her own and sponsored several children in Africa, ensuring they had access to education and opportunities for a brighter future.

Caring for others was an innate quality of Barbara's. Despite the demands of raising five children, she remained committed to fulfilling the dream of becoming a nurse. She later enrolled at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital Nursing School, where she proudly graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) on October 5, 1994.

A dedicated and compassionate nurse, Barbara was beloved by both her colleagues and patients. Throughout her career at St. Joseph's Nursing Home in Dorchester, Chestnut Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation, and Laurel Ridge Rehabilitation Center in Jamaica Plain, she was known for her selflessness, generosity, and tireless work ethic. Whether bringing meals to coworkers, offering financial assistance, or simply being a comforting presence, Barbara's kindness left a lasting impact on everyone she encountered. She often worked multiple jobs to ensure her children never went without, embodying the true spirit of sacrifice and love.

Barbara's heart for caregiving extended beyond her profession—she embodied the principles of love and devotion in her own family, particularly in her deep commitment to elder care. Twice in her lifetime, she willingly stepped into the role of caretaker for her elderly loved ones. She lovingly cared for her late aunt Edna, ensuring she was surrounded by warmth, dignity, and family. Most recently, Barbara retired from her beloved nursing career to dedicate herself fully to the care of her father, ensuring he could age in the comfort of home, surrounded by love. She was passionate about honoring the elderly in her family, believing in the importance of caring for one's own.

Barbara's faith in God was the driving force behind her unwavering commitment to serving and caring for others. In 1983, she was baptized into Christ at the Church of Christ in Roxbury, marking the beginning of her spiritual journey. She later became an active member of the Church of Christ in Mattapan, where she devoted herself to nurturing the faith of her children, nieces, nephews, and neighborhood children. She prioritized bringing them to Bible classes and Sunday worship, reminding them that a strong relationship with God is essential. Barbara's faith was powerfully expressed through her daily acts of love, kindness, and selflessness. She lived out her beliefs through service, always offering a helping hand, a listening ear, and a heart full of compassion. Her unwavering devotion to supporting and uplifting her loved ones inspired many family members and friends to strengthen their own faith, leaving a legacy of love through action. Barbara continued her membership in the Church of Christ as it moved to various locations in the community, including Talbot Avenue Church of Christ, Church of Christ in Milton, and the Bedford St. Church of Christ in Abington, MA.

Barbara was a pillar of her community, known for her generosity, kindness, and selflessness. She firmly believed that "it is better to give than to receive," and that "God would always provide." Her love was not just spoken but demonstrated—through the meals she cooked, the hands she held, and the countless lives she uplifted.

Her presence will be deeply missed, especially during holidays and special occasions when she went above and beyond to make sure every child, grandchild, niece, nephew, and family member felt cherished. Her famous potato salad, stew chicken, and beloved fish dinners will be lovingly remembered, as she always ensured that no one ever left her home hungry or without a word of encouragement.

Despite the challenges of being a single mother, Barbara's children never doubted her love. She created a home filled with warmth, security, and unwavering support. Her grandchildren experienced the same deep affection, wrapped in her comforting words, gentle guidance, and unbreakable devotion.

On Sunday, February 23, 2025, Barbara Rosemarie Malcolm peacefully transitioned from this life, finding rest in glory from her earthly labors. Though she is no longer with us in body, her spirit lives on in the countless lives she touched. Her legacy of love, faith, and selflessness will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her.

She leaves behind her cherished children: Patrick, Shauntelle (Paul), Duwayne, Aubrey, and Areitah; her loving father, Aubrey Malcolm; her siblings: Merna (Daniel), Carlfred (Abigail), Michael, and Alexia; seventeen adoring grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, foster children, friends, and extended family across the United States and Jamaica.
