Barbara Bernice King Hemingway, 80, passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on December 13, 2018,after a long fight with cancer.  She is survived by her devoted husband Herman W. Hemingway, Jr., and loving daughters Angela Hemingway, and Myra Hemingway.  She was the proud grandmother of Amarachi, Alanna, and Amaechinna "Mimi" Iwuh.

Daughter of Evy Angelina and Joseph King,Sister of Mary Ellen Martin, the late Joanne King, Ernestine Powers, Peter King, and the late Thomas King.  Aunt of beloved nieces and nephews Darlene Martin, Theodore Nobles, Christopher King, Karen Martin Phillips, Conrad J. Martin, Todd Nobles, Tony Nobles, Takisha King, Peter King, Tyhisha King Owens, and Tashawn King Smith. She also leaves behind numerous cousins.

A multitalented modern woman Barbara was a world traveler, an accomplished Chinese brush technique artist, pianist, and an avid reader.Barbara had a flair for entertaining and a penchant for bringing family and friends together for celebrations and social events. Barbara spent time in many of the countries of North Africa, East Africa, West Africa, and South Africa.  She also visited China, Turkey, Europe (Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland) and Dominica among others.

She was an active member of the TransAfrica advocacy organization in the late  70s and 80s the oldest and largest social justice organization in the U.S. that focuses on the African world.  During this time she was involved in the Free South Africa Anti-apartheid Movement.  Barbara received her RN from Mass General Hospital in the late 1950s. She later earned her undergraduate degree from Boston College and her Masters from the University of Massachusetts in Lowell  and became a Nurse Practitioner.  She was a professor at Ahmad Bello University in Zaria, Nigeria and at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, School of Nursing.
