Annie Mae was born on February 7, 1938 in Keysville, Virginia. The last of four children - Ruth, John, Florence and youngest child of Harrison Payne and Annie Wood. Annie was married at a young age to Clarence Louis Fowlkes, also of Keysville, Virginia. As a young wife, Annie remained in Virginia while Clarence Fowlkes joined the military to serve our country. She and her two oldest children ultimately relocated to Boston MA with the assistance of her sister, the late Florence Payne. Annie established family roots in the communities of the South End and Lower Roxbury areas whereas the size of the family grew with the addition of two more children. She was a standup mother, community activist, and received many accolades, citations, and numerous awards from the City of Boston, and in her latter years of life, Annie moved to the suburbs of Holbrook, MA.

Annie had many "Dreams to Remember." She attended a small schoolhouse in Keysville Virginia until grade nine as her education was interrupted when she became a young wife and mother. She had the mindset and skills of a PhD scholar when it came to life, love, family, and proved it with her unwavering actions throughout her lifetime. Family was everything to Annie and her main request was that her children be close to one another and stick together no matter what! She was a loving wife and mother and immediately found employment when she moved to Boston as a maid and housekeeper until by God's grace and her PhD mindset showed her a better way of life for herself and her children. That mindset instilled by God's grace led to her dedication with her employer Polaroid where she ultimately retired. Through her years and years of hard work, no matter what it took, Annie managed to put all four of her children through college and she was ever so proud of the accomplishments they were able to achieve through her discipline and strong work ethic. Annie was also a member and Trustee of Christ Temple Church of Personal Experience where she gave her life to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was a dedicated active member for several years serving on the Choir and many committees. Annie's discipline, hard work, and contributions continue to be shown not only by her children, but also by her grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her teachings will live on as we pass down her lessons and legacy throughout our lineage for many generations that follow.

Annie leaves to mourn her children- Harrison Fowlkes, Betty Wright, the late Clarence "Monty" Fowlkes, and her youngest daughter Hilda Fowlkes. She also leaves to mourn Clarence Fowlkes- her husband, son in law Kirk Douglas Woods, daughter in law Elaine Wilson-Fowlkes, her late siblings Florence, Ruth & John Payne, her grandchildren Aretha Bowens & family, Tamika Bowens & family, Anthony Jamal Wright & family, Anthony Lamont Fowlkes, Khyle Douglas Woods, her nieces and nephews Bessie Poles & family, Leslie Payne & family, Donald Payne & family, her late nephews Lester Payne, Wayne & Warren Payne and a host of great nieces, great nephews, great grandchildren, cousins, and many other family members from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and several friends whose lives Annie was a part of and touched dearly!
